Playboy to Celebrate Anna Nicole.
April 7, 2007
“I can make clear at this time,” he says, “that I am not the father of the child.”
The Playboy magnate enjoys his laugh about the paternity uncertainties still swirling around Anna Nicole Smith, but his feelings about the former Playmate turned pop icon are no joke. In serious fashion, his bunny empire will offer three upcoming Smith tributes: a 10-page pictorial in the magazine’s May issue, an hourlong retrospective on Playboy TV and an online memorial on Playboy.com.
Smith, who first appeared on the magazine’s cover in March 1992 and was named Playmate of the Year in 1993, was 39 when she died of an accidental drug overdose in February.
So what was it about the buxom blonde Texan that Hefner found so alluring?
“It was her presence in front of the camera,” he told The Associated Press on Thursday, chatting in the library of his famed Playboy Mansion. “She was one of those who loved being in front of the camera and came alive in front of the camera. There was very clearly a Marilyn Monroe quality about her and that aspiration was clear from the very beginning. She talked about Marilyn Monroe all the time.”
Smith often posed like Monroe, he said. At a Halloween party in 2004, she came dressed in a “Marilyn Monroe-type outfit” accompanied by three men in tuxedos: her attorney Howard K. Stern, boyfriend Larry Birkhead and son Daniel.
“The irony in terms of Anna Nicole’s fascination with Marilyn Monroe is how successful she was in building a similar kind of career, not through acting but simply through celebrity itself,” said Hefner, who was wearing his usual silk pajamas and smoking jacket. “The tragedy is she lived large as Marilyn did and died in a very similar way.”
She was still Vickie Smith when she first caught the eye of Playboy editors, who argued over whether to include her in the magazine.
“She came here and she weighed about 160 pounds,” Hefner recalled. “We like the voluptuous ladies but not that voluptuous. It was a wonderful statement for the simple fact that beauty has no limitation in terms of size. You can be a big lady and a beautiful lady, and she was.”
With three tributes, might Playboy be opening itself to criticism for profiting from Smith’s death? Not the case, Hefner quickly replied. “It’s quite frankly celebrating her in a way that she would appreciate.”
The publishing titan turns 81 on Monday, but makes little concession to the calendar. He just celebrated his birthday with a bash in Las Vegas, and recently started work on the third season of The Girls Next Door, an E! reality show about life with his girlfriends Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson.
Their upcoming adventures include an appearance at the Toyota Grand Prix, where Hefner will serve as grand marshal (and Wilkinson will drive a race car), and a trip to Monte Carlo at the invitation of Prince Albert, Hefner said.

Anna Nicole Dies of Accidental Drug Overdose.
March 26, 2007
Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental drug overdose after she was found unresponsive at a hotel, authorities said Monday.
“We found nothing to indicate any foul play,” said Chief Charlie Tiger of the Seminole police department.
Neither Tiger nor Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper immediately said what drug or drugs were involved in her death. Perper said the detailed autopsy showed no evidence of disease.
Smith, 39, had been found unresponsive Feb. 8 in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
The weeks after her death that day were filled with public courtroom drama and private whispers about what might have killed her. Officials delayed releasing the autopsy results because of additional evidence, not publicly released.
Perper’s initial examination had revealed no serious injuries. Perper said then that prescription drugs, but no illegal drugs, were found in Smith’s hotel room, though he wouldn’t identify them.
Smith had arrived at the Hard Rock on Feb. 5 and planned to leave four days later aboard a new yacht that her companion Howard K. Stern was arranging to buy. She was seldom seen outside her room during her stay: She was said to be suffering from a stomach flu before she died.
Because her death was so sudden, and because her 20-year-old son Daniel died under suspicious circumstances five months earlier, there has been speculation about possible criminal activity surrounding the deaths. The Seminole Police Department investigated the case because the casino is on tribal land.
An inquest into Daniel’s death is scheduled to start Tuesday in the Bahamas, where he died.
Smith grew up in Texas and went from topless dancer to Playboy Playmate of the Year, Guess jeans model and bride of 89-year-old oilman J. Howard Marshall II. She took her fight for Marshall’s estimated $500 million fortune as far as the Supreme Court, and the ongoing battle could make her infant daughter, Dannielynn, very wealthy. Stern and two other men have claimed to be the baby’s father.

Official Autopsy Report to Come Monday.
March 24, 2007
The results of former Playboy Playmate, Anna Nicole Smith’s autopsy are expected to be revealed Monday, but already two sister publications are claiming the model died from a toxic amount of sleeping medication in her system.Sister publications Star Magazine and the National Enquirer claimed Smith died from an overdose of sedative chloral hydrate. Anna Nicole’s idol, Marilyn Monroe, also had the drug in her system when she died, Access Hollywood can reveal.
Smith did not, the magazines reported, have methadone or other painkillers in her system when she passed away.
Smith was already suffering from another ailment when she took the fatal overdose according to the magazines. Before leaving the Bahamas for Florida, they claim her buttocks were injected with a substance from an unsterilized needle, which caused a major infection.
“As she boarded the plane for Miami, Anna Nicole developed a painful abscess at the site of the injection,” a source with knowledge of the case told the magazines. “The needle wasn’t sterile. The pain kept getting worse as the abscess got larger and larger very quickly.”
After becoming very sick with a high fever Anna refused to go to the hospital. Instead her people treated her at the hotel. She reportedly had a high temperature, diarrhea, vomiting and was unable to pass fluids.
“She was still vomiting and suffering diarrhea,” the source told the mags. “Again, she spent the whole day in bed, as the abscess continued to grow. She was in such pain, she just wanted to sleep.”
The Enquirer and Star then said Anna Nicole took the overdose of chloral hydrate, the evening of February 7, leading to her death

Anna’s Autopsy Reports Delayed.
March 9, 2007
The medical examiner who conducted Anna Nicole Smith’s autopsy said Thursday that he knows how she died.
But the details of Smith’s February 8 demise remain shrouded, as Broward County Medical Examiner Dr Joshua Perper said he will delay making his findings public until Florida’s Seminole Police Department completes its investigation.
Perper told Fox News that police told him that additional evidence had been obtained in Smith’s untimely death at age 39. Perper said it was unlikely but possible that he would change his conclusion based on the unspecified additional evidence.
Gossip website TMZ.com said that the meeting between police and Perper came just after detectives working the case had interviewed the bodyguard who was with Smith on the day she died. The report quoted him as saying that she was on “heavy doses” of prescription drugs that day, and that the behaviour of her partner Howard K Stern had been strange.

Do You Trust Howard K. Stern?
February 22, 2007A murder accusation sparked chaotic scenes at the Fort Lauderdale courthouse where Anna Nicole Smith’s mother, Virgie Arthur, and lover, Howard K Stern, fight over her remains. The bizarre legal triangle is completed by celebrity photographer Larry Birkhead, who claims to be the father of Smith’s infant daughter Dannielynn Hope.
Taking the stand, Smith’s mother implied that Stern was responsible for her daughter and grandson’s death. “My grandson did not overdose,” said a tearful Arthur. “Howard was there when he died and Howard was there when my daughter died — and he has my granddaughter …”
Birkhead’s attorney, Debra Opri, appeared to directly accuse Stern of murdering Smith. Stern’s lawyer, Krista Barth, said: “Miss Opri just made a statement to my client that he actually killed Miss Smith. I have to protect him,” said Barth.
Judge Seidlin moved to end murder speculation stating that the issue of where Smith is to be buried needed to be resolved as the celebrity’s body is rapidly decomposing, despite being embalmed on the weekend.
Smith’s mother wants her daughter to be buried in Texas, Anna Nicole’s birthplace, while Stern wants her laid to rest in the Bahamas, where her son Daniel is buried
“Bring it on, mommie dearest”
While Arthur lashed out at Stern, Anna Nicole slammed her mother from beyond the grave. In a video presented by Stern’s legal team, Anna Nicole called her mother “evil”, accused her of regular beatings, and said she will “never” get to see her daughter Dannielynn Hope.
By the end of the first excerpt, Anna Nicole’s lower lip is trembling with anger as she challenges her mother, saying: “Bring it on mum, mommie dearest, bring it on!”
Arthur watched quietly, with her husband’s arm on her shoulder, while Stern was handed tissues after putting his head in his hand as the tape was played.
So eerie was the video that Judge Larry Seidlin asked it to be stopped half-way through
Faxed will
In further developments, it has emerged that a copy of Anna Nicole’s will was faxed to the home she shared with Stern just five days before she mysteriously died.
It is unclear whether it was being sent to the former model or her partner, but it has led to speculation that she may have been about to make changes to the document.
Another possibility is that Stern may have needed to see it for some reason.
The revelation, throws into question Stern’s testimony in the Florida courtroom, after he insisted he did not know much about the document. During cross-examination, Stern had told the judge he did not know much about Anna Nicole’s will.
He said he does not “remember” taking part in its conception and knew only that the estate “was supposed to go to her son and I was supposed to be the guardian”.
Stern also said that Anna Nicole had “talked about” changing the will since the death of Daniel.
Now a fax cover sheet has emerged showing the document was sent from the offices of Ron Rale, who represents Stern in the case, to the couple’s home in the Bahamas.
It was sent at 2.18am on February 3, two days before Anna Nicole and Stern arrived in Florida on a boat-buying trip that proved to be her last.
Stern’s legal team has admitted they were not sure where the original will was and that all they had were non-authenticated copies.
Bug phobia
In an odd footnote to the case, it has come to light that Anna Nicole was so afraid of bugs she wanted to make sure they could not get to her after she died.
Giving evidence, Stern said the reportedly death-obsessed Smith had asked him to make sure he found a cemetery for her family where plots were bug-proof.
He said: “She wanted me to look at how secure the ground plots were and whether bugs could get into the body because both she and Daniel were afraid of bugs.”

Latest on Anna Nicole
February 17, 2007
Fort Lauderdale, Florida- Anna Nicole Smith’s will was released to the public per orders of Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin. The 5 year old will (signed in July, 2001) left everything to deceased son, Daniel. Being so old, there was no mention of daughter Dannielynn. Howard K. Stern was named executor of the estate. Anna Nicole will be embalmed. But what does this all mean for the money, and what about 5-month old Dannielynn?
Anna Nicole’s will was so outdated, that it is almost useless. With Daniel’s death, and Dannielyn’s birth, everything has changed. While the will does not mention Dannielynn, there is a section that states, “such that my children are distributed sufficient sums for their health, education and support” (www.cnn.com). This offers some hope for Dannielyn, the rightful heir of the estate. Anna Nicole obviously intended for her money to go to her offspring. This will supports that, even if the details are outdated.
However, with Howard Stern being the executor, how will this be ensured? Anna Nicole apparently did not want her money going to him or any other man. Her will reads, “I have intentionally omitted to provide for my spouse and other heirs, including future spouses and children and other descendants now living and those hereafter born or adopted” (www.sfgate.com).
What about custody of the child? There was obviously no mention of custody in the will, so the paternity battle continues. Pending DNA confirmation that has yet to be performed, this decision will be left to the courts.
Meanwhile, Anna Nicole’s “loved ones” are still fighting over her burial site. Anna’s mother wants the burial to be in Florida, while Howard Stern insists that she should be put to rest in the Bahamas (www.reuters.com). There was no mention of the burial site in the will.
With this latest piece of information, we really don’t have many more answers. The rightful is still in question, there is still no legal guardian for Dannielynn, and no burial place. It will be days or weeks before these questions are answered by the courts.

Anna’s Last Days.
February 13, 2007
Anna Nicole Smith rode the elevator with everyone else, to a room that wasn’t the most expensive, at a hotel that wasn’t the nicest, in a hardscrabble part of town with the right name on the wrong coast.
And before word of her presence made it very far, she died.
For all the hours of airtime and columns of newsprint Smith’s final hours prompted, she died not an A-list starlet but simply a face too familiar not to acknowledge. And as her final hours ticked away, she found herself here, five floors up from a twinkling, clinking casino in a Hollywood that’s not the one of every girl’s dreams.
___
There are no stars on Hollywood Boulevard; it has pawn shops and car lots and a buffet of all-you-can-eat fried chicken, and eventually gives way to cheap motels and apartment buildings yearning for a fresh coat of paint.
The street cuts through State Road 7, which is lined with a vacant mall and an adult video store, and leads through an urban Indian reservation to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, which rises from a landscape otherwise screaming for some sparkle.
Smith arrived in Hollywood on Feb. 5 and planned to leave four days later aboard a new yacht her companion Howard K. Stern was arranging to buy. It was familiar terrain. She had been here as recently as last month; a concierge said her stays were often compliments of the hotel.
Room 607, where Smith was found Thursday, remains sealed. A hotel spokesman said he is unsure when it might be opened again, but if the final check-in places of other celebrities is any guide, it may gain a cult appeal.
The heavy mahogany door to a similar two-bedroom suite opens to a small rounded foyer with a guitar pick on the wall where the polished silver latch hits. Mounted to the wall are two fixtures resembling bunches of silver-stemmed tulips with illuminated white blossoms; hanging from the ceiling is an orb of glass that looks like a transparent, motionless disco ball.
The living room has an orange corduroy couch and behind pale orange curtains, windows with a view of a pool even more curvaceous than Smith, and just past, a parking garage and freeways. The sitting area connects to two bedrooms, including the master, separated by two massive floor-to-ceiling sliding doors with frosted glass.
Inside is a four-post canopy bed with a down comforter and a simple duvet of subtle white stripes. The sheets are soft Egyptian cotton. A display on the nightstand phone reminds the guest that the casino is always open.
The master bathroom has a deep whirlpool tub with a jar of green bath salts, an orchid and a loofah near its rim. The glassed-in shower has a stainless-steel head that makes the water fall like rain. A copy of Rolling Stone is within reach of the commode; the rolls of toilet paper are sealed by either a red sticker resembling an admission ticket or a band of bright yellow paper sporting the singer Steve Winwood’s line “Roll with it, baby.”
Hotel spokesman Gary Bitner said all of the two-bedroom suites are similar, although the layouts and wall hangings often differ.
Gold-wrapped chocolates arrive with turndown service, the minibars contain lubricant and glow-in-the-dark condoms, a leopard-print ironing board is stowed in a wardrobe closet. In this Hollywood, the average resident might have to save for weeks to pay for one night in this suite, though at $1,600 a night, it is not even the hotel’s biggest or priciest. In California’s Hollywood, it would merit an adjective like modest.
___
Among a couple of dozen hotel workers, a number noted they didn’t even know Smith was here until she was pushed into an ambulance on a gurney.
In previous visits, they said, she arranged for massages and went to dinner at the pricey Council Oak steakhouse. This time, though she was spotted arriving and plunking down more than $2,000 at a shoe store, she was said to have spent much of the time in her room, ordering soup as she fought an illness.
A bartender said the woman known for taking off her clothes for Playboy and marrying a rich man 60 years her senior was spotted out last Wednesday, having drinks rather quietly in a room off the casino floor where only employees typically pass through.
The big questions as to why that night ended up being Smith’s last remain a mystery, guarded in part by tightlipped police, scattered witnesses and a man in black standing like a sentry outside Room 607.

A Tribute to Anna Nicole
February 9, 2007
this is a showcase of Anna at her best. As much as I have thought badly about Anna at different times in her life and have questioned her motives, I don’t think anyone can say that she wasn’t a beautiful, free spirited, & good hearted person. What happened to her is terrible, she is been through so much recently with the death of her son and the birth of her daughter, it breaks my heart that she is gone. While Anna always had that typical big boob blonde hair look that could be generic, there was always something about her that stood out. She is drenched with attitude and exudes a sense of glamour, sex appeal and confidence. Anna you will be missed!
